Women in Transition



MISSION STATEMENT
It is the mission of "WOMEN IN TRANSITION" to provide leadership in the promotion and development of a fully responsive range of preventive and recovery services to chemically dependent females in our community and their immediate family members.

PURPOSE
* To provide an optimal environment for recovery of addicted females.
* To prevent, reduce or minimize the occurrence of chemical addiction.
* To investigate innovative approaches to care for the chemically addicted female.
* To encourage drug and alcohol-free lifestyles.
* To focus on individual strengths.
* To improve self-concept and enhance self-esteem in women.
* To reduce the rate of recidivism in the courts and in substance abuse treatment centers.
* Preservation and enhancement of the family unit.
* To assist with linkage and advocacy for healthcare, education and employment.

GOALS
* All females participants will have the goal of attaining a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.
* To assist women with addictive or dependent substance abuse problems to become self-sufficient in the community.
* To learn and implement more effective coping skills to prevent relapse.
* To improve communication, assertiveness and interpersonal skills.
* To assess job skills and educational needs for linkage to community resources.
* To increase awareness of gender differences in treatment of substance abuse.
* Exploration and definition of personal identity to enhance the development of supportive relationships with women and significant others.
* Improve parenting skills by exploring "family of origin" issues.
* To enhance parenting skills by increasing knowledge of child/adolescent development.

CRITERIA FOR REFERRALS
1. Population served; females age 18 and older.
2. Priority for pregnant women and women with children.
3. Prior history of drug abuse treatment.
4. Non-users and functional users.
5. Willingness to sign releases for:
    a. Home visits
    b. Urines/medicals
    c. Caseworkers, etc.
6. Must commit to 10 weeks of group (4 days a week) and one year of aftercare.
7. Must be literate - the ability to read is necessary (Journal writing, testing and handouts).
8. Willingness to have a physical examination and routine laboratory work-ups.
9. Willingness to take psychological tests.
