Our Treatment Philosophy
CompDrug’s clinical treatment philosophy is a mental health approach based in evidence based interventions. The clinical focus on emotional regulation and coping skills training is grounded in the well researched areas of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), Cognitive and Social Learning Models of psychology. These treatment interventions are recognized by the National Institute of Drug Addiction (NIDA) as evidence-based interventions for the treatment of Opioid Dependence.
The core elements of CompDrug’s treatment interventions are Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Communication Skills Training, Social Skills Training and Relapse Prevention Training. In addition, Motivational Interviewing skills are utilized by the Clinical Staff to develop individual treatment plans to increase the probability of treatment compliance.
Outpatient Treatment Program
CompDrug’s Outpatient Treatment program helps restore the patient with untreated mental illness and/or substance abuse to fully functioning adult status within his/her family and the community, and teaches skills to help the patient maintain the recovered level of functioning. Our program focuses on clinical intervention, family support, relationship building, work and meaningful activity, patient empowerment and self-control. In addition to individual treatment, we also offer a variety of group therapy. Our agency also provides on-site psychiatric services. The program seeks to increase recovery resiliency and supports adults so they can live productive and fulfilling lives free from substance abuse and the stigma of mental illness.
Outpatient services are provided to adults age 18 and older diagnosed with a substance abuse and/or mental health disorder, and are provided through individual and/or group counseling sessions.
Other services include assessment, case management, urine screening, vocational/educational services, and referral to support and recovery groups.
Medication Assisted Treatment
Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of medication in conjunction with counseling to provide a patient-centered approach to the treatment of substance use disorder. This evidence-based treatment for opiate dependence includes the 3 FDA-approved medications: Methadone, Suboxone®, and Vivitrol®. At CompDrug, most of our patients are medically managed with one of these medications in conjunction with active participation in counseling. The advantages of MAT include switching from a short acting opiate to a long acting opiate, and switching from an illicit, often intravenous drug to an oral medication that is taken under physician supervision. Participation in treatment leads to increased survival, improved physical health, improved family relationships, improved birth outcomes, decreased crime and improved productivity at work and in society.
Medication assisted treatment helps normalize the body’s neurological and hormonal functions that have been impaired by the use of heroin and misuse of prescription opiates. By reducing or eliminating the craving for opioid drugs and preventing the onset of withdrawal, the medication provides an opportunity to effectively engage the individual in treatment. However, the medication does not work without treatment. The converse is also true; treatment without medication has relapse rates as high as 95%. CompDrug discovered long ago, and research has now established, that it is the combination of medication and counseling in an integrated manner that is the most effective means of treating opiate addiction.
Group Counseling
Group counseling is offered daily addressing various topics on different days. A few of the topics include Healthy Relationships, Co-Dependency, Mindfulness, Stress Management, Anger Management, Relapse Prevention and Art Therapy.
Increasing reflective functioning, emotional regulation and interpersonal conflict management skills are themes addressed directly or indirectly in all groups. These themes have been identified extensively by research to be areas of deficit for individuals engaging in problematic behaviors related to self and others.
Open: Open groups are open to any CompDrug patient anytime the group is in session. No referrals or advance notice required to attend – join us anytime, all are welcome!
Closed: A closed group may have specific requirements or criteria, and therefore requires a referral to the group. Please inquire with a counselor for more information about a specific closed group.
Partial Hospitalization
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a trauma-informed, mental health, wellness treatment modality for people who are struggling with substance use and mental health concerns. PHP is an important next step for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment for mental health stabilization or substance use detoxification and no longer require 24-hour medical or safety monitoring. Programming is intensive. Patients receive mental health and substance use counseling focusing on increasing resilience by strengthening reflective functioning, emotional regulation, and interpersonal conflict management skills.
The program is non-punitive, educational, and supportive, encouraging participants to increase self-awareness, and build strengths and skills necessary for independent substance-free living. Group participants are a vital element of this modality as they help us learn the value of acknowledging and appropriately expressing feelings and learning to trust in a supportive environment. Learning emotional vulnerability and developing trust is a natural, healthy experience and a key element of the modality.
Pregnancy & Parenting Pathway
CompDrug’s Pregnancy and Parenting Pathway program provides wrap around services for pregnant people struggling with a Substance Use Disorder to ensure the health of both the patient and their infant. This pathway of services follows a patient through the duration of pregnancy and continues until the child’s 2nd birthday.
Pregnant patients who are enrolled in our Pregnancy and Parenting Pathway are offered a “CompDrug Care Plan,” outlining their current support systems, basic needs, birth plan, support for infant and patient after delivery, needs of other children, and needs of other caregivers in the home.
